Alan McElwain is co-owner, along with his wife Estella, of McElwain Real Estate. Alan and Estella came to San Luis Obispo in 1961 to attend Cal Poly University. They fell in love with the area and decided to stay here to raise their family. Their daughter Cindy Cherry is a part of the appraisal team. Having lived and worked in San Luis County for over forty years, Alan has a very intimate knowledge of the community and its housing market.
Alan is a California State Certified General Appraiser and also holds a California Real Estate Broker license. He is a member of the Appraisal Institute as well as the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers.
Alan is a member of the National Association of Realtors, California Association of Realtors and Paso Robles Association of Realtors. He has served as president and regional chairman for the local association. Alan has participated in numerous appraisal seminars as well as broker/appraiser roundtables. He is frequently asked to speak to groups of Realtors and lenders regarding appraisal topics.
Alan is also a leader in appraisal technology. He was among the first appraisers to bring the appraisal specification, ordering, and delivery processes online – enabling him to save clients much of the time, money and hassles usually associated with the appraisal process.
Since founding McElwain Real Estate in 1983, Alan has prepared over 1200 appraisal reports for mortgage, refinance, tax appeal, PMI removal, prelisting, relocation, home equity, home improvement, divorce, trust, and estate purposes.
Alan and his wife, Estella, have also given much to the community by volunteering for the American Red Cross for over 20 years. In addition to responding to house fires and local disasters they have also responded to national disasters such as Hurrican Andrew, the Northridge Earthquake, the San Rafael Earthquake and the Missouri Floods. They also teach classes for the American Red Cross.
